About the Course at Sewanee

The Course at Sewanee was renovated by Gil Hanse in 2013—Golf Magazine’s 2009 Architect of the Year—and further enhanced with a comprehensive bunker renovation in 2026.

While the original hole routing remains intact, Hanse reimagined, redesigned, and rebuilt nearly every other aspect of the course, including all nine green complexes, strategically positioned bunkers, and a distinct set of alternate tees, while remaining mindful of the delicate ecosystem of the Cumberland Plateau. The 2026 bunker renovation further elevated the course’s playability, aesthetics, and strategic character, reinforcing Hanse’s original vision.

Standing on the reshaped tee of No. 5, The Edge, it is easy to see why Hanse was commissioned to design the 2016 Olympic Golf Course in Rio de Janeiro and selected to refashion the famed Blue Monster at Trump National Doral.

Complemented by The Sewanee Inn and golf lodge, The Course at Sewanee offers a memorable experience for golfers and visitors alike, whether enjoying a round or simply taking in the breathtaking scenery of the Plateau.
