About the Course at Sewanee

Established in 1915, this nine-hole gem was originally laid out by Bishop Albion W. Knight, who created the course without formal design training and with only the help of mules and the University’s football team.

In 2013, acclaimed architects Gil Hanse, Golf Magazine’s 2009 Architect of the Year, and Jim Wagner completed a thoughtful renovation that preserved the original routing while introducing all-new green complexes, bunkers, and alternate tees. The result is a distinctive design that can be played as two varied loops of nine with changing yardages and pars.

Located on the campus of the University of the South, the course enjoys a setting as remarkable as its design. In 2025, Travel & Leisure Magazine named Sewanee the most beautiful college campus in the United States.

National and international recognition has followed. Golf.com ranks Sewanee as the 9th-best nine-hole course in the U.S. and 18th-best in the world. Golfweek’s 2026 Best Courses You Can Play rankings named Sewanee the #2 Public-Access Golf Course in Tennessee. In Golf Digest’s 2023 ranking of the 25 Greatest College Golf Courses in America, Sewanee rose to No. 10, topping every nine-hole course in that elite list. The magazine praised its “impressively rugged-yet-refined bunkering, prominent undulations, and stunning vistas,” recognizing Sewanee as one of the nation’s greatest collegiate layouts.
